Chapter 1
“Tell us all about it,” Eden said to Kenai, jealous that he wasn’t chosen first to take the “perfect seven” on a date.
“A gentlemen never tells,” Kenai said quietly, while Bighorn rolled his spool in a slick display of finesse.
“Then it musn’t have been very good,” Bighorn coaxed, trying to get Kenai to give up the goods.
”As a matter of fact,” Kenai retorted, “it was very nice indeed!” Eden, with his small stature and edgy personality was ready to pounce on Kenai.
“If you don’t start talking soon I’m going to bend that clicker so far, you won’t be able to make noise for a year,” squealed Eden.
“Cool your drag Eden, you don’t want to fish in waters you can’t handle,” quipped Kenai.
“ANY PLACE, ANY TIME!” Eden screamed.
“Ok, ok cool your bearings, Eden, I will tell you guys what happened,” Kenai said with a chuckle. “We went camping for the weekend by the Kitimat River in British Columbia. The weather was perfect every day. The river was cool, clear and luckily the water level was still low.”
“We decided to float the river by raft and brought a nicely packed fly box with all the treats we could handle. My favorite - and hers too - a crystal leech joined our line up of interesting grub. We had a great time, even saw a moose on the riverbank”.
“All this talk about scenery makes me want to cry and read a good romance novel,” Eden interrupted sarcastically. “That can mean only one thing, Bighorn, they caught nothing, nada, zip, zilch. Kenai struck out!”
“Not so fast Eden,” Kenai added smoothly. “Just because the scenery was amazing doesn’t mean the fishing wasn’t, it made the experience that much better. We actually ended up parking the leech next to a broken tree close to the waters’ edge and stripping our line rather quickly.” Eden and Bighorn exchanged a look.
“Then, all of a sudden, there was an explosion, like someone dropped a grenade in the water. She, my perfect date, lifted up and gave all she had while I increased my drag and let this bad boy run to what felt like the end of my line. Not the case though, my backing was ready for this one. It took 20 minutes of dancing, moving, fighting and waiting, but at the end of it we lifted a 21 pound Steelhead from the Kitinat. Not a bad day at all!” said Kenai with a smirk.
Eden and Bighorn were silent, stunned to learn Kenai had shared a moment with the “perfect seven” that they may not be able to match. Eden could only ask, “eh, did you have any trouble finding your way home?”
Bighorn thought for a second and simply added, “what did you have for dinner?”
“Lasagna.”
